System Analysis Knowledge Bytes: What’s New in the Clarity 3D Solver Course

The Clarity 3D Solver course provides all the essential training required to start working with the Clarity 3D Solver. The course covers both Clarity 3D Layout and the Clarity 3D Workbench. Clarity 3D Layout is designed for S-parameter model extraction of layered design structures, such as IC Package and PCB designs. It provides an accurate EM solution that is much faster than other popular 3D finite element analysis tools. The Clarity 3D Workbench is a full 3D environment that provides accurate EM solutions for complicated three-dimensional structures. It utilizes industry-leading parallelization technology to ensure that both meshing and frequency sweeping can be partitioned and parallelized across as many computers and cores as are available.

Viewing EM Fields in Clarity 3D Layout

Creating a PCB stack-up and adding traces and vias is quick and easy in Clarity 3D Layout. You will define a simple PCB structure and add ports for an EM simulation. You will be able to extract the S-Parameters of the structure and plot the return loss and the insertion loss of the structure.

EM Fields in a simple transmission line structure

You will also be able to view the magnitude of the EM fields in the structure at the frequencies you simulate.

Model Extraction for Differential Pairs

Clarity 3D Layout can open PCB Editor boards and APD IC packages so that the transmission lines for differential pairs and be simulated and S-Parameter models created. You will open an IC package in Clarity 3D Layout and cut the design to reduce the amount of computer resources required to run the simulation and extraction.

After the simulation, you will be able to view the return loss and insertion loss for the S-Parameter model.

Simulating a 3D Connector

The Clarity 3D Workbench allows you to create or import detailed 3D structures that can then be simulated for model extraction. You will import a detailed connector from a STEP model as well as a PCB carrier. You will then align the two models and create ports for the simulation.

E-fields in a connector

The 3D FEM simulation will produce an S-parameter model and you will graph the insertion loss and return loss as well as display the E-fields for the 3D structure.

Interposer Modeling

The Clarity 3D Solver training class also takes you through using Clarity 3D Layout to model an IC Package interposer. You will import design data for an interposer through the GDSII interface and add ports so the interposer can be modeled and simulated.

The simulation will produce an S-parameter model that can be used in a system-level simulation, and you will graph the insertion loss and return loss of the interposer.

Clarity 3D Workbench Examples

The final modules of the Clarity 3D Solver class will take you through several examples of creating and simulating 3D structures. You will create and simulate a differential coaxial cable with wave ports as well as an inset fed patch antenna.
